School Readiness Checklist
Try to look at your child's readiness in all areas of development. Remember that children develop at different rates and that your child's "stage" is more important than their age.

Can respond to rules and usually remembers them
Can get on well with other children, respecting their feelings and wishes
Can give and receive friendship
Expresses feelings without punching or kicking
Can concentrate on a story with a group of children for 20 minutes
Can ask for help or for whatever they need/want
Plays with other children without adults intervening
Is happy in the child care centre/preschool and doesn't worry about being left
Can speak in clear sentences and can be understood
Knows their name and how old they are
Can pick out their name from a short list
Can hold a pen properly and shows an interest in drawing shapes and letters
Can draw recognizable things and likes to talk about their drawings
Knows the names of basic colours and sorts things into basic colour groups
Can count out groups of four or five objects
Can remember songs and stories and retell or sing them
Enjoys books and can handle them correctly
Can follow two or three simple instructions without distractions
Can play memory games
Can thread beads and build with lego type blocks
Is in good health and enjoys vigorous play
Can run, jump, hop, climb, throw, catch and kick a ball
Can go to the toilet and redress themself without help
Can find their own belongings and look after them
